An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) is a licensed professional in the plane and aircraft industry responsible for the safe, flight-worthy condition of aircraft. AMEs are not pilots in aircraft, they are involved in aviation safety with a strictly supporting role. Before take-off, all aircrafts have to undergo inspection, repair and certification by an AME.
An items man’s main job is to keep an aircraft system in bith and to certify an aircraft system to be in flight. They conduct basic inspections, troubleshoot mechanical issues, and maintain engines, landing gear, electrical systems and avionics on a wide range of airframe types. AMEs abide by strict policies and rules, set by aviation regulators and aircraft manufacturers.
AMEs check all systems before each flight to ensure they are in good working order. Once the maintenance or repair work is complete, they issue a certificate called the Certificate of Release to Service (CRS) to insure the aircraft is safe to operate. This certification has to be obtained before any aircraft can fly.
Generally, an AME is employed in hangars or maintenance workshops or directly at the airfield. Because aircraft maintenance is an ongoing operation, their work may involve working shifts which includes some weekends and nights. They tend to work in stressful situations, particularly if there is a short turnaround time to meet with commercial flights. Detailed attention and adherence to safety procedures are imperative as part of this role.
Successful AME’s need to have good technical knowledge and analytical skills. It is important that AMEs have an in-depth knowledge of the maintenance tools, procedures, and aircraft systems. Music ABLE is a characteristic that includes responsibility, precision and problem-solving. In aviation, the safety aspect is of major importance; otherwise, a slight error can make a huge difference, and ensure that AMEs are extremely disciplined and attentive.
There are great opportunities available for aircraft maintenance engineers (AMEs) in the airline industry. This includes cooperation with airlines, Maintenance Repair Organizations (MROs), and aviation training centers as well as aircraft manufacturers. As AMEs gain experience, they can advance to higher-level positions like Maintenance Manager, Quality Assurance Engineer, Technical Inspector, and so on.
The AME’s job is of utmost importance as they ensure passenger safety and aircraft reliability. For all of the aircraft operations, the knowledge & certification of an AME is required. AME profession is becoming more popular in an era of aircraft growth and the demand for skilled AME is escalating, resulting in steady and lucrative career opportunities for aircraft enthusiasts and engineering professionals.
