AME Job Profiles

An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) is a licensed professional in the plane and aircraft industry responsible for the safe, flight-worthy condition of aircraft. AMEs are not pilots in aircraft, they are involved in aviation safety with a strictly supporting role. Before take-off, all aircrafts have to undergo inspection, repair and certification by an AME.

 

Role and Responsibilities

An items man’s main job is to keep an aircraft system in bith and to certify an aircraft system to be in flight. They conduct basic inspections, troubleshoot mechanical issues, and maintain engines, landing gear, electrical systems and avionics on a wide range of airframe types. AMEs abide by strict policies and rules, set by aviation regulators and aircraft manufacturers.

AMEs check all systems before each flight to ensure they are in good working order. Once the maintenance or repair work is complete, they issue a certificate called the Certificate of Release to Service (CRS) to insure the aircraft is safe to operate. Generally, an AME is employed in hangars or maintenance workshops or directly at the airfield. Because aircraft maintenance is an ongoing operation, their work may involve working shifts which includes some weekends and nights. They tend to work in stressful situations, particularly if there is a short turnaround time to meet with commercial flights.
